An empty cell is not an unlucky hour — it only means the hexagram for that hour names none of the five paths above, and that happens for two quite different reasons: a column with diagonal hatching is a ground of life where the hexagram deliberately names no path and speaks only of a way of living; a plain column is one where no pair of Target lines satisfies both halves. Each stroke in a day cell is one double-hour, counted from the hour of Zi.

The hour of Zi begins at 23:00, so a day's Zi row also covers the stretch from 23:00 to midnight on the day before.
